White Christmas 2012

It started raining about 1:30AM and continued through the morning into early afternoon. It was up to 1.70" when it changed over to snow around 1:30PM. The winds picked up and we had blowing snow for a couple of hours. The snow slacked up around 4:30PM with a good 4-5" on the ground but continued to blow around most of the night. We didn't go below freezing until about 3PM which meant the roads were mostly just wet but did start to freeze during the evening hours as they became less traveled.

Second snow fall of the month but the first measurable one really. Hasn't the last few years of White Christmas Days meant more snow fall during the winter???

Dusting in early Dec. '12

They said it was a possibility and they were right! We woke to a dusting of snow up here in Frisco on 12/10/12. It wasn't really measurable but it was cute on the grass and roofs of houses. Finally gets you in the fall/winter frame of mind after all the warm temperatures.

First snow of the season

It started as rain at 3A and got heavy at times and totaled up 1" by 11A. Then it turned over to snow with heavy snow at times and continued to around 3P. As is typical for us, we had snow before it got below freezing. The temps started at 45 at midnight then dropped to freezing around 1:30P. The sun came out around 4P and started melting things. It was in the low 30s till the sun went down and it looks like it will be 27 by the time we hit midnight.

Total snowfall was 3-4" and that was after we had the 1" of rain. It was a nice wet sticky snow great for snow balls. As always it was pretty to watch come down and since it had been warm the streets were just wet and not a frozen mess.

Greatest all-time calendar day snow on record at D/FW

RERDFW
RECORD EVENT REPORT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORT WORTH TX
1237 AM CST FRI FEB 12 2010
...GREATEST ALL-TIME CALENDAR DAY SNOW ON RECORD SET AT DALLAS FORT WORTH...
...RECORD 24-HOUR SNOW FOR FEBRUARY SET AT DALLAS FORT WORTH...
...RECORD DAILY MAXIMUM SNOWFALL FOR FEBRUARY 11TH SET AT DALLAS FORT WORTH...
DALLAS FORT WORTH AIRPORT HAS RECORDED 11.2 INCHES OF SNOW FOR FEBRUARY 11, 2010. THIS BREAKS THE GREATEST CALENDAR DAY SNOW ON RECORD. THE OLD RECORD IS 7.8 INCHES SET ON JANUARY 15, 1964 AND JANUARY 14, 1917.
THIS ALSO BREAKS THE RECORD 24-HOUR SNOWFALL FOR FEBRUARY WHICH
WAS 7.5 INCHES...SET ON FEBRUARY 17, 1978 AND FEBRUARY 25, 1924.
OBVIOUSLY....THIS SHATTERS THE RECORD DAILY MAXIMUM SNOWFALL FOR FEBRUARY 11TH OF 1.4 INCHES WHICH WAS PREVIOUSLY SET IN 1988.

Snow storm of 2/11/10

Looks like it started snowing around 5:00A and really hasn't stopped since. Temps dropped from 37° to 34° pretty fast once it started. There was almost 2" on the ground by 8A. Coming down in big, wet, fluffy flakes - heavy early but mostly just steady. It was only sticking to the trees and grass leaving the streets just wet so it was no problem getting around through the daylight hours.

As you see temps only moved around a degree or two and didn't go below freezing until about 8:30P.

Here at the house we've got 8½-9" on the ground now. D/FW is reporting 11.2" for the day which sets all sorts of records (which I'll post those next).

I can't remember and don't think I've seen this much snow in 30 years of living in Dallas, TX. It really was just absolutely gorgeous watching it come down all day long both here in Frisco and high above downtown Dallas. Didn't matter whether you were 43 floors up or down at street level - it was just a steady wet and fluffy snowfall for better than 12 hours straight. I'll have some pics and video to share later.
